What did Aristotle believe? In fixed characteristics, things didn't change.
What was Aristotle's classification like? Minerals, plants, animals, humans, god.
Natural Theology 1400's
What is Natural Theology? Aristotle's view merged with christianity, all organisms are created by god. No new organisms, no extinction, no change.
Linnaeus 1700's
What was Linnaues views? Adopted natural theology and Earth's Diversity: proof that the creator designed a species for a specific purpose. Organisms adapt to their environment. Developed Taxonomy.
Cuvier 1800's Father of Paleontology
What did Cuvier notice? the older the layer of stratum the more dissimilar the fossils are too current life forms.
Catastrophism past events ocurred suddenly to create boundries between strata. (Cuvier)
Lyell 1800's Father of Geology
What did Lyell Develop? Hutton's Proposition and Uniformatarianism
Hutton's Proposititon Changes in Earth's surface are a result of continious geological proccesses.
Unfiformitariansim mechanisms of change are constant over time. (slow and gradual)
Age of Exploration 1600-1800's, Dawn of Biogeography
Biogeoraphy other places with life similarities with European species, but yet different.
Lamarck 1809
What did Lamarck publish a paper saying? evolutionary change explains fossil records and organisms matched to their environment
What were the 2 mechanisms of evolution that Lamarck came up with? Use and Disue, Inheritance of aquired characterisitcs
Use and Disue parts that are used more become stronger and larger.
Inheritance of aquired characteristics organsims pass along any useful modifications developed through life. this is wrong because you can only inherit through genetic characteristics.
Darwin 1859
What did Darwin publish and recognize? Published "origin of species" and recognized how species are connected through common ancestors.
