Bio/Chemistry
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Cell | The basic units of living organisms. |
| Cell Theory | All organisms are composed of one or more cells. |
| Compound Light Microscope | Use a series of lens to magnify objects. |
| Electron Microscope | Uses a beam of electrons. |
| Eukaryote | Are made up of eukaryote cells. |
| Nucleus | The central membrane bound organelle that manages or controls cellular functions. |
| Organelle | Small, specialized structures. |
| Prokaryote | Don't have membrane bound organelles. |
| Fluid Mosaic Model | The model of the plasma membrane. |
| Phospholipid | Has a glycerol backbone, two fatty acid chains, and a phosphate group. |
| Plasma Membrane | The flexible boundary between the cell and its environment. |
| Selective Permeability | A process in which a membrane allows some molecules to pass through while keeping others out. |
| Transport Proteins | Move needed substances or waste materials through the plasma membrane. |
| Cell Wall | A fairly rigid structure located outside the plasma membrane that provides additional support and protection. |
| Chlorophyll | Traps light energy and gives leaves and stems their green color. |
| Chloroplast | Cell organelles that capture light energy and convert it to chemical energy |
| Chromatin | Strands of the genetic material, DNA. |
| Cilia | Short, numerous projections that look like hairs. |
| Cytoplasm | Clear, gelatinous fluid inside a cell. |
| Cytoskeleton | Provides support and structure for the cell. |
| Endoplasmic Reticulum | The site of cellular chemical reactions. |
| Flagella | Longer projections that move with a whip-like motion. |
| Golgi Apparatus | Flattened stack of tubular membranes that modifies the proteins. |
| Lysosome | Organelles that contain digestive enzymes. |
| Microfilament | Smaller, solid protein fibers. |
| Microtubule | Thin, hollow cylinders made of proteins. |
| Mitochondria | Membrane-bound organelles in plant and animal cells that transform energy for the cell. |
| Nucleolus | Makes ribosomes, |
| Plastid | Used for storage. |
| Ribosome | Sites where the cell produces proteins according to the directions of DNA. |
| Vacuole | A temporary storage of materials. |
