What is transport? the process by which substances enter and leave cells and become distributed within the cells
What is reproduction ? The process when living things produce new organisms of there own kind
What is nutrition ? When an organism takes materials, from its external environment and changes them into forms it can use
What is digestion ? The breakdown of complex food materials into simpler forms that an organism can use
What is assimilation ? the incorporation of materials into the organisms body
What is cellular specialization ? Different cells becoming specialized for different function
Do plants have nervous systems and hormones ? - No nervous systems -yes have parts to produce hormones
What is an organism? Living things
What is ASEXUAL reproduction ? A single individual produces offspring identical to the parent
What is SEXUAL reproduction ? - 2 parents and the off spring is not identical to either parent (but a combination of both)

What is homeostasis ? The condition of a constant internal environment
What is anaerobic respiration ? When food is broken down without oxygen ?
What are the 9 characteristics that distinguish living things from non living thing ? (RRGCHHMUL -respond -reproduce -grow -change over time -highly organized and containing many complex chemical substances -have definite form and limited size -made up of 1 or more cells - use energy - limited life span
What are the 8 general processes by which the life of an organism is maintained? - nutrition -transport -respiration -synthesis -growth -excretion -regulation -reproduction
What is ingestion ? the taking in of food from the enviroment
What is synthesis? -when organisms are able to combine simple substances chemically to form ore complex substances * In animals the substances used in synthesis are products of digestion
What is regulation ? All activities that maintain an organisms
What is a metabolism? All the chemical reactions occurring within the cells of an organism
What is respiration? the process of releasing chemical energy stored in nutrients
What are nutrients ? substances that an organism needs for energy, growth, repair or maintenance
What are the 2 basic types of nutrition ? Type 1 -organisms can produce complex nutrients from simple substances found in the environment example: bacteria and one celled organisms Type 2 - organisms obtain nutrients ready made from the environment example: animals

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
