Cell Organelles

TermDefinition
Nucleus Control center of the cell; it houses chromosomes/DNA-the genetic code
Cytoplasm Gel-like liquid that fills the cell; gives structure and suspends organelles
Mitochondria Powerhouse of the cell; it releases energy for the cell (mitochondria = plural)
Vacuole Stores water (in plant cells it is much larger than animal cells)
Ribosomes Protien synthesizers or protien builders
Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum Contain ribosomes the surface, protien synthesized in the ribosomes collect in the endoplasmic reticulum for transport thoughout the cell
Chloroplast Plant cell's food factory conatining chlorophyll; the site of photosynthesis
Cell Membrane Surrounds the cyptoplasm of plant and animal cells (allows certain things to pass into the cell and allows certain things to pass out of the cell)
Unicellular Organisms that have only one cell
Multicellular Organisms who have many cells
Prokaryote Organisms whose cells lack a nucleus and membrane-bound organelles
Eukaryote Organisms whose cells have a distinct nucleus and organelles
Cell Theory All living things are made up of cells; the cell is unit of structure and function in all living things; all new cells come from previously cells
Cell Wall Rigid structure which surrounds plant cells (provides support)
Organelle Structure inside the cell that carries out a certain function
Nucleolus A small rounded body within the cell nucleusfunctioning in ribosome manufacture
Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum Synthesizes lipids, phospholipids, and steroids
Golgi Body Involved in glycosylation (i.e. adding carbohydrate to a protein), helps package molecules like proteins into vesicles for secretion, transport of lipids around the cell, and the creation of lysosomes
Lysosome A cell organelle containig enzymes that break down food
Turgor Pressure The pressure exerted by water inside the cell against the cell wall
Endocrine System Secretes hormones that regulate body functions; coordinates other organ systems
Immune System Helps the body protect against disease
Lymphatic System System of vessels assisting the veins in recovering the body's tissues fluid and returning them to the heart
Homozygous Same
Heterozygous Different

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
