Cells (Roshane)

TermDefinition
Nucleus The organelle in a cell that holds DNA and controls the entire cell.
Cytoplasm The fluid that fills most of the cell.
Mitochondria "battery" of the cell; generates energy
Vacuole Stores water and nutrients that the cell needs
Ribosomes Follow instructions from the nucleus and create protein the cell needs.
Smooth Endoplasmic reticulum It makes lipids, phospholipids, and steroids.
Chloroplast Organelle that is only in the plant cell that makes food for the cell using photosynthesis
Cell wall A protective layer that surrounds the cell membrane of plant cells made out of cellulose
Cell Membrane The thin flexible layer that holds the cell together and controls which goes in and out of the cell
Unicellular Organism that is made up of only one cell
Multicellular Organism that is made up of two or more cells
Prokaryote An organism of the kingdom Monera, comprising the bacteria and cyanobacteria
Eukaryote A single-celled or multicellular organism whose cells contain a distinct membrane-bound nucleus.
Cell Theory Cell theory is a scientific theory that describes the properties of cells
Organelle A structure in a cell that performs a specific function
Nucleolus Produces Ribosomes
Golgi Body A membrane-bound structure that packages proteins inside the cell before they are sent to their destination
Lysosome Organelles that breaks down waste materials
Turgor Pressure The pressure made by water inside the cell against the cell wall.
Endocrine System Secretes hormones that regulates body functions; coordinates other organ systems.
Immune System Protects against disease.
Lymphatic System Vessels that assist veins in recovering the body's tissue fluids and return them to the heart.
Homozygous Having the same alleles at a particular gene
Heterozygous Having dissimilar alleles that code for the same gene
Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum An organelle made up of a system of membranous tubes
