| Term | Definition |

| Reference Map | mapping that includes all possible relationships between a source system and a target system |
| Thematic Map | map or chart designed to show a particular theme connected with a specific geographic area |
| GPS | space-based satellite navigation system that provides location and time information in all weather conditions, anywhere on or near the Earth |
| GIS | designed to capture, store, manipulate, analyze, manage and present all types of geographical data |
| Distance Scale | particular length or distance determined with the precision of one order |
| Directional Indicator | predetermined course by direct reading and comparison of two indicators |
| Inset Map | More detailed (larger scale) representation of a specific area on a map usually placed in an uncluttered portion |
| Legend | traditional story sometimes popularly regarded as historical but unauthenticated |
| Latitude | distance of a place north or south of the earth's equator |
| Longitude | distance of a place east or west of the meridian at Greenwich, England, or west of the standard meridian of a celestial object |
| Equator | imaginary line drawn around the earth equally distant from both poles |
| Prime Meridian | a line of longitude, at which longitude is defined to be 0° |
| Northern Hemisphere | half of a planet that is north of its equator |
| Southern Hempisphere | part of a rotating astronomical body that lies south of the equator |
| Eastern Hemisphere | half of the Earth that is east of the Prime Meridian and west of 180° longitude |
| Western Hemisphere | half of the Earth that lies west of the Prime Meridian and east of the Antimeridian |
| Continents | world's main continuous expanses of land |
| Map Grid | network of lines, or graticule, representing parallels and meridians or plane coordinates |
