| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Prokaryote | Cells without a membrane bound nucleus. |
| Eukaryote | Cells with a nucleus. |
| Unicellular | One-celled living organism. |
| Multicellular | Many celled living organism. |
| Cell Theory | Cells are the basic unit of all living things; all living things are made up of cells; all cells are made of pre-existing cells. |
| Cell Wall | Rigid structure which surrounds plant cells and provides support. |
| Cell Membrane | Surrounds the cytoplasm of the plant and animal cell; it regulates what can enter and leave the cell. |
| Organelle | Structures that functions a living cell. |
| Cytoplasm | Gel-like liquid that fills the cell; gives structure and suspends the organelles. |
| Nucleus | Control center of the cell; it stores the genetic code in its DNA. |
| Nucleolus | Holds all DNA and plans for the cell and creates ribosomes. |
| Mitochondria | Powerhouse of the cell; it releases energy. |
| Vacuole | Storage unit for water, nutrients, and wastes. The vacuole in the plant cell is much larger than in the animal cell. |
| Chloroplast | Found only in plant cells and contains chlorophyll, which through the process of photosynthesis, converts solar energy into chemical energy in the form of glucose(sugar). |
| Ribosome | Organelle that makes proteins for the cell. |
| Smooth ER | Transports materials and is smooth. |
| Rough ER | Transports materials and is studded with ribosomes. |
| Golgi Body | Controls the import and exports of lipids and protein that was sent from the endoplasmic reticulum. |
| Lysosome | Is made by the Golgi apparatus and contains enzymes that break down waste and old organelles. |
| Turgor Pressure | Pressure exerted on the cell wall of a plant cell from the water contained in the vacuole. |
| Endocrine System | Secrets hormones that regulate body functions. |
| Immune System | Protects the body against disease. |
| Lymphatic System | Part of the circulatory system and drains the body's tissue fluids and returns them to the heart. |
| Homozygous | Pair of identical alleles. |
| Heterozygous | Pair of alleles where one is dominant and the other is recessive. |
