The World of Earth Science Chapter 1
| Term | Definition |

| volume | Measures the size of a body or region in three dimensional space. (How much it can contain) |
| mass | The amount of matter in an object |
| temperature | The measure of how hot or cold something is. |
| area | The measure of how much surface an object has. |
| Density | Ratio of mass to volume. How much matter is in a given amount of space. (Heavier = more dense) |
| Geology | The study of the origin, history, and structure of the earth. |
| volcanologist | One who studies volcanoes. |
| seismologist | A scientist who studies earthquakes. |
| paleontologist | A scientist who studies fossils |
| oceanography | The study of the oceans/seas including plants, animals, the ocean floor, and water. |
| meteorology | The study of the earth's atmosphere in relation to weather and climate. |
| astronomy | The study of the universe. |
| environmental science | The study of how humans interact with the environment. |
| ecologist | A person who studies a community of organisms and their nonliving environment. |
| geochemist | A branch of earth science that combines the studies of geology and chemistry. |
| gram | The basic unit in the SI system that measures the mass of objects. |
| meter | The basic unit of length in the SI system. |
| liter | A basic unit of volume in the SI system. |
| kelvin | The SI unit for temperature. |
| SI | The International System of Units (the Metric System). |
