The World of Earth Science Chapter 1

TermDefinition
volume Measures the size of a body or region in three dimensional space. (How much it can contain)
mass The amount of matter in an object
temperature The measure of how hot or cold something is.
area The measure of how much surface an object has.
Density Ratio of mass to volume. How much matter is in a given amount of space. (Heavier = more dense)
Geology The study of the origin, history, and structure of the earth.
volcanologist One who studies volcanoes.
seismologist A scientist who studies earthquakes.
paleontologist A scientist who studies fossils
oceanography The study of the oceans/seas including plants, animals, the ocean floor, and water.
meteorology The study of the earth's atmosphere in relation to weather and climate.
astronomy The study of the universe.
environmental science The study of how humans interact with the environment.
ecologist A person who studies a community of organisms and their nonliving environment.
geochemist A branch of earth science that combines the studies of geology and chemistry.
gram The basic unit in the SI system that measures the mass of objects.
meter The basic unit of length in the SI system.
liter A basic unit of volume in the SI system.
kelvin The SI unit for temperature.
SI The International System of Units (the Metric System).
