Scientific Inquiry 2
Scientific Inquiry
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Scientific Method | The process of scientific investigation |
| Problem | What will be tested/solved. Scientific Method cannot answer questions about personal taste or judgement |
| Research | Understand your problem and use your knowledge to create an experiment. Research important information to help you experiment |
| Hypothesis | Hypothesis= An educated guess. A hypothesis is NOT a fact. In science, a hypothesis must be able to be tested. |
| Experiment (Materials, Procedures) | Remember to control your variables! Form operational definitions! Understand your variables! |
| Data | Organize your data in the form of a graph, or a table. Graphing your data will help you notice patterns or trends in your results. |
| Conclusion | Conclusion= A summary of what you have learned from your experiment. In your conclusion, include what you learned, whether your hypothesis was right or wrong, and if anything happened during the experiment that might have changed the results |
| Observations | The act of noting or detecting phenomenon by the senses. For example, taking measurements is a form of observation. |
| Quantitative | Observations using numbers (ex. There are 5 apples) |
| Qualitative | Observations that do NOT use numbers (ex. the apples are red) |
| Inferences | Developing new knowledge based upon old knowledge. |
| Scientific Law | States a repeated observation |
| Scientific Theory | A widely accepted hypothesis that stands the test of time. Theories are often tested, and usually not rejected. |
| Independent Variable | What you are changing in an experiment. X axis |
| Dependent Variable | What you are testing in an experiment. Y axis |
| Control Group | What you are comparing the experiment to |
| Constant | What you keep the same in an experiment |
| Accuracy | How close a measured value is to the actual (true) value |
| Precision | How close the measured values are to each other |
