Bio Lab Quiz #1

Scientific Method, Metric system, Elements

TermDefinition
Experimental Variable The factor that is tested in the experiment
Dependent Variable What is observed, measured,or counted in the experiment
Experimental Group The group that contains the variable that is being tested
Control is identical to the experimental group except for lacking the variable that is being tested
Theory the hypothesis that is supported by many experiments and a lot of data (proven hypothesis)
Meter Length, distance
Liter amount of space an object takes up (volume)
Gram Mass (weight)
Atom the basic unit of an element (smallest), is composed of Neutrons, protons, and electrons
Neutrons in the nucleus,Neutral(no charge) 1AMU
Protons in the nucleus,positive charge(+) 1AMU
Electrons orbits around the nucleus in "shells", negative charge(-), very little mass 0AMU
Element A substance composed of a single kind of atom Cannot be broken down into another substance by any means (chemical, physical)
Atomic # # of protons found in the nucleus of an atom
Atomic Weight The # of protons & neutrons in the nucleus of an atom (avg. of the masses)
Mass # = Protons+neutrons "atomic weight"
# of protons = Atomic #
# of electrons = Atomic # (same as protons)
# of neutrons = Atomic _ Atomic weight #
Compound Substance in which 2 or more different elements are chemically BONDED together Ex.HCL
Mixture 2 or more substances that are mixed together but are NOT chemically bonded
Isotope Atoms of the same element with differing #'s of neutrons
Nucleus Have a positive charge Protons(+) & Neutrons(0)
Electron Cloud filled by electrons, takes up all space (-) negative charge
Covalent Bond Formed when electrons are shared between elements
Ionic Bond Formed when electrons are lost or gained

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
