| cell | the smallest structural and functional unit of an organism, typically microscopic and consisting of cytoplasm and a nucleus enclosed in a membrane. Microscopic organisms typically consist of a single cell, which is either eukaryotic or prokaryotic. |
| prokaryotic | The prokaryotes are a group of organisms whose cells lack a membrane-bound nucleus. The organisms whose cells do have a nucleus are called eukaryotes. |
| eukaryotic | A eukaryote is an organism whose cells contain a nucleus and other structures enclosed within membranes. Eukaryotes are formally the taxon Eukarya or Eukaryota |
| multicellular | (of an organism or part) having or consisting of many cells |
| eyepiece | the lens or group of lenses that is closest to the eye in a microscope, telescope, or other optical instrument. |
| stage | a small platform on a microscope where the specimen is mounted for examination |
| low power objective | The shortest lens that is mounted on the revolving nosepiece which has the least magnification and is used to scan the specimen |
| scanning power objective | smallest lens on nosepiece, mag 4x |
| high power objective | The longer lens that is mounted on the revolving nosepiece which has greater magnification and is used to observe close detail. |
| coarse objective | focuses the image when it is viewed through the scanning/low power lenes |
| fine adjustment knob | to focus the image when it is viewed through the high power lenes |
| diaphragm | adjust the amount of light passing through the slide and into the lens |
| unicellular | (of protozoans, certain algae and spores, etc.) consisting of a single cell. |
