mantle thin layer of tissue covering a mollusk's body; secretes a shell or protects the body of the mollusk
gills organs that exchange carbon dioxide for oxygen
open circulatory system blood moves through vessels and into open spaces around the organs
closed circulatory system blood moves through the body in closed vessels
radula a tongue-like organ with rows of teeth used to scrape food for gastropods
exoskeleton thick, hard outer covering that protects and supports arthropods
molting shedding and replacing of an exoskeleton
spiracles openings in an insect's body through which air enters and waste gases leave
metamorphosis process in which insects change their body form to become adults
water-vascular system network of water-filled canals that allow echinoderms to move, capture food, take in oxygen, and give off wastes
tube feet hollow, thin-walled tubes that end in suction cups that allow echinoderms to move
herbivore animal that eats only plants
carnivore animal that eats only other animals
omnivore animal that eats both plants and animals
vertebrate animal with a backbone
invertebrate animal without a backbone
radial symmetry body parts arranged in a circle around a center point
bilateral symmetry body parts arranged in a similar way on both sides of the body like mirror images
sessile when an animal remains in one place for most of its life
hermaphrodite animal that produces both sperm and egg cells in the same body
setae bristlelike hairs on each segment of a worm that help it move
crop digestive sac where earthworms store soil
gizzard muscular digestive organ earthworms use to grind soil and particles
appendages jointed structures on animals, such as legs, wings or antennae
