What is the Atmosphere? The part of the Earth that consists of gases that surround the Earth.
What is the Hydrosphere? The water part of the Earth's surface.
What is the Lithosphere? The rigid outer part of the Earth containing rocks, soils, and minerals which includes all of the crust and part of the mantle.
What is the Crust of the Earth? The top or outer layer of the Earth above the mantle which is thinner under the oceans and thicker under the continents.
What is the Mantle? The middle layer of the Earth between the crust and the core.
What is the Core? The center part of the Earth beneath the mantle.
The theory that says that the earth's surface is made up of about 20 moving pieces is called? plate tectonics
What causes plate movement? mountains, earthquakes, and volcanoes
Since the 1500s, scientists have believed that the earth? seemed as though it should fit together
There is another idea that scientists believe may explain plate movement which is based on? gravity
A hypothesis or idea that is supported by evidence from experiments or observations becomes known as? a theory
What is the process that slowly breaks down and changes rocks by air, water, chemicals, or living things called? Weathering
What does chemical weathering change? the substance that makes up a rock, it can make it hard or turn soft
What is physical weathering change? weathering that does not change the substance that makes up a rock, but breaks the rock apart
Relocating or moving weathered rock and soil by water, ice, and wind is called? erosion
The most common factor that contributes to or causes erosion is? flowing water
What does deposition do? changes the earth's surface because eroded materials are dropped in new places
new rich land formed at a river's mouth by deposition is called? a delta
What is an igneous rock? melted mantle that has cooled
What is a fossil? remains of any dead organism trapped in layers of rocks
What is a sedimentary rock? solid particles cemented together
What is a metamorphic rock? remains of any dead organism trapped in layers of rocks
What is the rock cycle? how rocks change form
What is sand? igneous rock that has weathered and broken into tiny pieces
