Taxonomy the discipline of naming and classifying organisms based on shared characteristics.
Taxon unit of classification
Systematics classifying organisms based on evolutionary relationships.
what does systematics lead to? leads to phylogeny
Phylogeny Hypothesis of evolutionary history by looking at common ancestors
Clade group of taxa sharing a common ancestor
Branch Point divergence of two or more branches from a common ancestor
What is another name for a branch point? Node
What do deeper branches mean? a more distant common ancestor
What do shorter branches mean? a species developed more recently than a larger one
Monophyletic Clade a common ancestor of all the decendants
Paraphyletic Clade Common ancestor but not all decendants
Polyphyletic A group of taxa that came from different ancestors
What are the 4 taxanomic classes: 1.Amphibia 2.Mammalia 3.Reptilia 4.Aves
What is aves? A taxonomic class that means birds
Pleisiomorphs characteristics that are shared with ancestors
Synapomoprhy Characteristics not shared with acestors or possibly each other, makes the organisms unique
Steps to building a phylogeny? 1. select taxonomic groups and determine what characteristics there has to be. 2. Find an outgroup

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
