Antidiabetic medications

Sulfonylureas-glimepride(Amaryl), Glipizide (Glucotrol), Glyburide (Micronase) only used if some pancreas beta-cell function. Stimulates release of insulin from pancreas.
Biguanides - (Metformin (Glucophage) Decreases glucose production by liver, Not given if in renal failure. Avoid alpha-glucodiase inhibitors.
Alph glucosidase inhibitors - Acarbose (Precose), Miglitol (Glyset) delays digestion of carbohydrates. Taken immediately before meal. Can be mixed with other meds.
Thiazolidinediones - Rosiglitazone (Avandia), Pioglitazone (Actos) Decreases insulin resistance and inhibits glucogeogenesis. Regular liver function test. Can cause start of period after menopause.
Meglitinides - Regalinide (Prandin) Increases pancreatic insulin release. No meds if meal skipped.
Gliptins - Sitagliptin (Januvia) Enhances action of incretin hormones
Incretin mimetics - Exanatide (Byetta) SE- Pancreatitis. I hour before meals.
May increase blood glucose Bee polen, ginkgo biloba, glucosamine
