Antidiabetic medications
| Term | Definition |

| Sulfonylureas-glimepride(Amaryl), Glipizide (Glucotrol), Glyburide (Micronase) | only used if some pancreas beta-cell function. Stimulates release of insulin from pancreas. |
| Biguanides - (Metformin (Glucophage) | Decreases glucose production by liver, Not given if in renal failure. Avoid alpha-glucodiase inhibitors. |
| Alph glucosidase inhibitors - Acarbose (Precose), Miglitol (Glyset) | delays digestion of carbohydrates. Taken immediately before meal. Can be mixed with other meds. |
| Thiazolidinediones - Rosiglitazone (Avandia), Pioglitazone (Actos) | Decreases insulin resistance and inhibits glucogeogenesis. Regular liver function test. Can cause start of period after menopause. |
| Meglitinides - Regalinide (Prandin) | Increases pancreatic insulin release. No meds if meal skipped. |
| Gliptins - Sitagliptin (Januvia) | Enhances action of incretin hormones |
| Incretin mimetics - Exanatide (Byetta) | SE- Pancreatitis. I hour before meals. |
| May increase blood glucose | Bee polen, ginkgo biloba, glucosamine |
