nucleus center of the atom
isotypes atoms of the same element that have different numbers of neutrons
compound a substance that is composed of atoms of two or more different elements that are chemically combined.
covalent bond when two atoms share electrons the force that holds them together
molecule a group of atoms held together by covalent bond.
ion a charged particle made of atosm
ionic bond the attractive force between two ions of opposite charge
metabolism all of the chemical reactions that occur within an organism
mixture a combination of substances in which the individual componets retain their own properties
solution a mixture in which one or more substances are distributed evenly in another substance
acid any substance that forms hydrogen ions in water
base any substance that forms hydroxide ions in water
polar molecule a molecule with an unequal distribution of charge
hyrdrogen bond attraction of opposite charges between hydrogen and oxygen forms a weak bond
diffusion is the net movement of particles from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration.
dynamic equilibrium a condition in which there is continuous movement but no overall concentraion change
isomers compounds that have the same chemical formula but different three dimensional structures
polymer a large molecule formed when many smaller molecules bond together
carbohydrate a biomolecule composed of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen with a ratio of about two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom for every carbon atom
lipids large biomolecules that are made mostly of carbon and hydrogen with a small amount of oxygen.
protein a large complex polymer composed of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, and sometimes sulfur.
amino acids basic building blocks of proteins
peptide bond the covalent bond formed between the amino acids
enzyme a protein that changes the rate of a chemical reaction
nucleic acid is a complex biomolecule that stones cellular information in the form of a code

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
