| Protons | positively charged particles with a mass of about 1 amu |
| Neutrons | non-charged particles bonded together with strong forces |
| element | a pure substance that consists of one atom. It cannot be broken down into another substances |
| atomic number | it is a way that atoms are arranged by the number of protons in the nucleus. |
| isotope | a form of the same element with different numbers of neutrons |
| Radioactive isotopes | when the nucleus of the element is unstable and it causes it to breakdown at a constant rate over time. |
| compound | a substance formed by the chemical combination of two or more elements |
| chemical formula | a shorthand way of expressing the composition of a compound. |
| Ionic Bonds | Are formed when 1 or more electrons are transferred from one atom to another. |
| Covalent Bonds | When atoms share electrons and the electrons actually travel within both atoms. |
| Molecules | the smallest unit of most compounds |
