| Chordate | An animal that has the beginnings of a backbone during one or more stages of development. |
| Exoskeleton | A hard, external covering of an animal; most arthropods have one. |
| Ectotherm | A cold-blooded animal whose body temperature fluctuates with the temperature of its environment. |
| Appendage | An external structure that extends from the main body. |
| Endotherm | A warm-blooded animal that maintains a constant internal temperature. |
| Keratin | A protein that makes up bird feathers. |
| Arthropod | An inverterbrate that has a segmented body, jointed appendages, and usually an exoskeleton. |
| Crustacean | The class of animals with a hard exoskeleton. |
| Mollusk | The phylum of animals with shells, antennae, and soft bodies. |
| Echinoderm | The phylum with radial symmetery, tube feet, and spiny skin. |
| Cnidarian | The phylum that has stinging cells and a medusa-shaped body (such as the jellyfish) or a polyp-shaped body (such as the sea anemone). |
| Poriferan | The phylum of porous invertebrates that filter water for nutrients. |
| Ostia | The small pores through which water and nutrients enter a sponge. |
| Biome | A large region that has a particular climate and specific plants & animals. |
| Cephalopods | A class of animals with tentacles; means "head-foot". |
| Gastropod | A class of animals of one-shelled mollusks. |
