biology test 8/29/13

QuestionAnswer
biology the study of life
organization an orderly structure of living things
stimulus anything in a organism's environment that causes it to react
homeostasis the body's ability to control internal conditions needed for life
adaptation inherited characteristic of an organism to help keep it alive
theory a well-researched explanation based on observations and investigations
species group of organisms that can reproduce and have fertile offspring
reproduction production of offspring
development when an organism increases in complexity
metabolism all chemical reactions in the body
organism a living thing that has or had all the characteristics of life
response organism's reaction to a stimulus
what are the 5 steps of the scientific method? 1) ask a question 2) research topic 3) develop a hypothesis 4) create a procedure and test hypothesis 5) analyze data and report results
1st component needed for proper procedure independent variable- the one factor that can be manipulated during an experiment
2nd component needed for proper procedure dependent variable- variable that depends on the independent variable
3rd component needed for proper procedure constant- a factor that is the same throughout the experiment
4th component needed for proper procedure experimental group- group of people/ animals/ technology that will receive different independent variables
5th component needed for proper procedure control group- group that doesn't receive any independent variables
what's the difference between theory and law? a theory is a well-researched explanation based on explanations and investigations. a law is a rule that you follow and will be the same every time. theories can't become laws or vice-versa.
why is science a process instead of being in a specific order? because something wrong can happen in your experiment, causing you to start over. there are many steps.
describe qualitative and quantitative data qualitative- data represented in numbers quantitative- description of data
1st characteristic of life ALL organisms have at least one cell. cells are the basic units of life
2nd characteristic of life ALL organisms display organization.each structure has a specific function
3rd characteristic of life ALL organisms grow and develop
4th characteristic of life ALL organisms reproduce. they also pass traits to fertile offspring
5th characteristic of life ALL organisms react to stimuli
6th characteristic of life ALL organisms require energy to function. living things need food and plants need sunlight
7th characteristic of life ALL living things maintain homeostasis
8th characteristic of life ALL living things adapt to the environment and its conditions
are any of these characteristics questionable? is there any living thing that doesn't have all of these characteristics? Yes- the characteristic that organism's produce fertile offspring. Mules can't reproduce.
what's homeostasis? what are 3 examples in the human body? Homeostasis is the body's ability to control internal conditions needed to survive. three examples are heart rate, blood pressure, and breathing rate.
what is a negative feedback loop? how does it demonstrate homeostasis? a negative feedback loop is a process in which a change from normal range of function is equal to a response that resists that change. by having internal conditions become stable.
what's the difference between growth an development? growth is the increase in mass, while development is an increase in complexity.
what's the difference between a response and an adaptation? a response is a reaction to stimuli, but an adaption is an inherited characteristic over time.
describe/list the levels of organization in the human body. An organism is made up of 9 organ systems. Organs make up organ systems. Organs are made of tissues. Cells create tissues. Organelles make up cells. Macromolecules make up organelles. Macromolecules are made of molecules, and atoms make up molecules.
