| system | an organized group of parts that work together to form a whole |
| atmosphere | mixture of gases and particles that surrounds and protects the surface of the Earth |
| hydrosphere | all the water on the Earth |
| biosphere | all life on the Earth, in the air, on the land, and in the waters |
| geosphere | all the features on the Earth's surface |
| map scale | relates distance on a map to actual distances on Earth's surface |
| map legend | a chart that explains meanings of each symbol used on a map |
| mountains | areas of land higher than that surrounding it |
| plateaus | fairly level surfaces that stand higher than sea level |
| plains | gently rolling or flat features |
| latitude | distance in degrees north or south of the equator |
| prime meridian | imaginary line that stretches from the North Pole through Greenwich, England, to the South Polw |
| longitude | distance in degrees east or west of the prime meridian |
| projection | a way of representing Earth's curved surface on a flat map |
| topography | the shape of the land |
| contour lines | show area's elevation, slope and relief |
| elevation | how high above sea level something is |
| slope | how steep something is |
| relief | difference between high and low points |
| remote sensing | use of scientific equipment to gather information about something in the distance |
| sensor | mechanical or electrical device that receives and responds to a signal |
| false-color image | replacing Earth's colors with artificial ones |
| GIS | computer systems that can store and arrange geographic data and display that data in different types of maps |
