Rocks and Minerals

TermDefinition
Metamorphic rock Some rocks that take on a whole new look when under great temperature and pressure
Mineral Inorganic material found in nature that always has the same chemical makeup.
Rock Solid inorganic material that is usually made up of two or more minerals
Crystal Solid material with atoms arranged in a repeating pattern
Gem Rare valuable mineral that can be cut and polished
Ore Material that contains enough of a useful metal that it can be mined and sold at a profit
Igneous rock Intrusive rock that is produced when melted rock formed inside the earth hardens
Extrusive Describes igneous rocks with small crystals
Intrusive Describes a type of igneous rock that contains large crystals
Sedimentary rock A type of rock made from pieces of other rocks
Foliated Describes metamorphic rocks with visible layers of minerals
Nonfoliated Describes metamorphism rocks that lack distinct layers or bands
Rock cycle Diagram that shows the continuous process of rocks
Lava Molten rock material that exists at or above Earth's surface
Physical property Any characteristic of a material that you can observe without changing the identity of the material
Pressure Force applied over a given area
