| Metamorphic rock | Some rocks that take on a whole new look when under great temperature and pressure |
| Mineral | Inorganic material found in nature that always has the same chemical makeup. |
| Rock | Solid inorganic material that is usually made up of two or more minerals |
| Crystal | Solid material with atoms arranged in a repeating pattern |
| Gem | Rare valuable mineral that can be cut and polished |
| Ore | Material that contains enough of a useful metal that it can be mined and sold at a profit |
| Igneous rock | Intrusive rock that is produced when melted rock formed inside the earth hardens |
| Extrusive | Describes igneous rocks with small crystals |
| Intrusive | Describes a type of igneous rock that contains large crystals |
| Sedimentary rock | A type of rock made from pieces of other rocks |
| Foliated | Describes metamorphic rocks with visible layers of minerals |
| Nonfoliated | Describes metamorphism rocks that lack distinct layers or bands |
| Rock cycle | Diagram that shows the continuous process of rocks |
| Lava | Molten rock material that exists at or above Earth's surface |
| Physical property | Any characteristic of a material that you can observe without changing the identity of the material |
