Phases, Tides and Eclipses (Key terms)

TermDefinition
Phases The different shapes of the moon you see from earth
Eclipse An event in which an object in space comes between the sun and the third object, and casts a shadow on the third object.
Solar Eclipse When the moon passes in directly between the sun and Earth, blacking sunlight from Earth.
Lunar Eclipse When the earth blocks sunlight from reaching the moon.
Umbra The very darkest part of the moon's shadow.
Prenumbra The larger part of the moon's shadow
Tide The rise and fall of ocean water that occurs every 12.5 hours or so.
Spring Tide a tide with the greatest difference between consecutive low and high tides.
Neap Tide a tide with the least difference between consecutive low and high tides.
