Key Terms for chapter 13

Key TermDefinition
Weather The condition of Earth's atmosphere at a particular time and place.
Atmosphere The mixture of gases that surrounds Earth.
Ozone A form of oxygen that has three oxygen atoms in each molecule instead of the usual two.
Water Vapor The invisible, gaseous form of water.
Temperature Inversion A phenomenon that results when a layer of warm air becomes trapped between two cooler layers and is prevented from escaping.
Acid Rain Rain the is more acidic than usual.
Air Pressure A force that is the result of the weight of a column of air pushing down on an area.
Barometer An instrument used to measure changes in air pressure.
Altitude Elevation above sea level.
Pollutant A harmful substance in the air,water, or soil.
Density The measurement of how much mass of a substance is contained in a given volume.
