| spontaneous generation | mistaken idea that living things that can arise from nonliving sources |
| controlled experiment | a scientist carries out two tests that are identical in every respect except for one factor |
| autotroph | organisms that make their own food |
| heterotroph | organisms that cannot make their own food |
| homeostasis | the ability to maintain stable internal conditions |
| nucleus | a dense area in the cell that contains nucleic acids. The brain of the cell |
| prokaryote | organisms whose cells lack a nucleus |
| eukaryote | organisms with cells that contain nuclei |
