Water Properties
Hydrology
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| What is polarity / polar? | When a molecule (like water) has positive and negative sides |
| What is cohesion? | When water molecules are attracted to each other |
| What is adhesion | When water molecules are attracted to another substance |
| What is an example of cohesion? | Water sticking together as it is dropped on a penny. |
| What is an example of adhesion? | Water sticking to a spider web, a plant leaf, or the glass sides of a graduated cylinder. |
| What is the chemical formula for water? | H2O (Two hydrogen and one oxygen) |
| What is capillary action? | The movement of water up a thin tube, such as a plant stem, because of cohesion and adhesion |
| What is specific heat? | The amount of energy needed to raise the temperature of a substance. Water has a high specific heat, which means it takes a lot of energy to heat up water. |
| What is a solvent? | A substance that dissolves something |
| Why is water considered the "universal solvent?" | Water is really good at dissolving a wide variety of polar substances. Water CANNOT dissolve nonpolar substances (like oil) |
| What is surface tension? | The attraction between water molecules on the surface creates a thin layer that insects can walk on |
| What is density? | The amount of stuff (matter) in a given space (volume). Density = mass divided by volume. |
| What is unique about the density of water? | Water is LESS dense as a solid (ice) than as a liquid, so ice floats on top of water |
