| Term | Definition |

| Hydrogen Ion | A single proton with a charge of 1+. |
| Hydroxide Ion | A water molecule that has lost a proton and has a charge of 1-. |
| Acid | A substance that increases the hydrogen ion concentration of a solution. It has a pH from 1-7. |
| Base | A substance that reduces the hydrogen ion concentration of a solution. It has a pH from 8-14. |
| pH | The negative logarithm of the hydrogen ion concentration of a substance. |
| Buffer | A substance that minimizes changes in the concentration of H+ or HO-. |
| Acid Precipitation | Rain, snow, or fog with a pH lower than 5.6. |
