Human Body Systems

TermDefinition
Cellular levels of organization Cells, tissues, organs, organ systems, organism.
Cell The basic unit of structure and function of all living things.
Tissue Made up of many cells working together to perform a specific function.
Organ Made up of many tissues working together to perform a specific function.
Organ System Made up of several organs working together to perform a specific function.
Digestive System Includes the mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, and rectum. This system breaks down the food that you eat to deliver nutrients throughout your body to your cells.
Respiratory System Includes your nose, trachea, and lungs. This system brings in oxygen that your cells need and releases carbon dioxide as a waste product.
Reproductive System This system includes different organs for males and females, but allows organisms to reproduce to create offspring.
Circulatory System Includes the heart, veins, arteries, and blood. This system brings needed materials to your cells throughout your body and picks up the waste from your cells so that it can be eliminated from the body.
Excretory System Includes your kidneys, bladder, skin, and lungs. This system rids your body of it's wastes through using the bathroom, sweating, and exhaling.
Muscular System Includes the muscles in your body. This system is used to move your body.
Skeletal System Includes the bones or skeleton. This system is used to support your body and give it shape, as well as to protect your organs.
Nervous System Includes your brain, spinal cord, and nerves that are throughout your body. This system allows you to respond to stimuli in your environment such as temperature change, pain, and light. It also controls all of your bodily functions.
Immune System Includes your lymph nodes, white blood cells, and mucus. This system helps protect your body from sickness.
