Cells Structures

TermDefinition
Plant Cell One of the many tiny structures that together, make a plant.
Animal Cell One of the tiny structures that together, make an animal.
Cell Membrane The flexible outer covering of a cell that provides protection for the cell and allows materials into and out of the cell.
Nucleus Controls the cell's functions and contains it's genetic material.
Cytoplasm The gel-like fluid that allows the organelles to float throughout the cell.
Chloroplast Only found in plant cells, this is where the sun's energy is converted into glucose through the process of photosynthesis.
Mitochondria Found in both plant and animal cells, this where glucose is broken down and energy or ATP is released in a process called cellular respiration.
Nuclear Membrane The flexible outer covering that protects the nucleus and allows materials into and out of the nucleus.
Chromosomes The genetic material that is contained inside the nucleus. This is where your DNA is located.
Vacuole This organelle acts like a storage tank for the cell and holds water, food, or waste.
Endoplasmic Reticulum The organelle that transports proteins throughout your cell.
Cell Wall Only found on plant cells, this hard outer covering is made of cellulose and allows the plant to have a rigid structure.
Ribosome The tiny organelle that can be found floating in the cytoplasm or attached to the walls of the endoplasmic reticulum, this organelle makes proteins.
Organelle A tiny structure, with a specific job, inside of a cell.
Prokaryote a cell that lacks a nucleus; usually a single celled bacteria cell
Eukaryote a cell that has a nucleus; including plant cells, animal cells, fungi cells, and some protists
Selectively permeable membrane a characteristic of the cell membrane, this means that it allows only some materials into and out of the cell
Lysosome Contains digestive enzymes to break down old cell parts and waste.
Organelles that a plant has, that an animal does not: cell wall, chloroplast, large central vacuole.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
