Aquatic Exosystem An ecosystem located in bodies of water
Freshwater Ecosystem An ecosystem found in streams, lakes, and rivers where the water has less than 1% salt content
Limiting Factor A biotic or abiotic factor needed as a resource for survival; depletion prevents growth or expansion of the organisms or population
Marine Exosystem An ecosystem found in oceans, seas, and gulfs where the water has a salt content of at least 3.5%
Terrestrial Ecosystem An ecosystem found on land
Competition More than one individual, or population in an ecosystem, relies upon the same limited resources
Carrying Capacity The maximum number of individuals of a given species an area's resources can sustain indefinitely without significantly depleting or degrading those resources
Ecosystem community of living and nonliving things in their natural environment
Host An organisms used by another organism for nutrients, shelter, or transport; it is harmed by the relationship
Parasite An organism that survives on a host organism and causes harm to the host
Parasitism Symbiotic relationship where one organism is harmed (host) and the other benefits (parasite)
Symbiosis A relationship between two organisms
Commensalism Symbiotic relationship between organisms where one is benefitted and the other is neither benefitted nor harmed
Mutualism Symbiotic relationship where both organisms benefit
