population ecology
| Term | Definition | hint/example |
|---|---|---|
| carrying capacity | the population of any species that a specific environment can 'handle' without negatively affecting that population, but at the same time, showing no population growth | |
| competition | two or more populations needing the same resource, but there is not enough of that resource to equally sustain each population | to compete for light, water, oxygen, space, etc... |
| density-dependent limiting factors | those factors that negatively affect the growth of a population and have more effect the larger the population | light, water, nitrates, oxygen, etc... |
| density-independent limiting factors | those factors that negatively affect the growth of a population, but affect populations equally regardless of their population size | hurricane, tornado, drought, flood, etc.... |
| ecologist | a person who studies the interactions of living (biotic) and nonliving (abiotic) of any ecosytem | |
| exponential growth | the positive growth of a population that occurs when the population increases by a repeat factor | occurs when every generation doubles in size |
| limiting factors | those environmental factors that negatively affect the population growth of any species | water, light, nitrates, oxygen, space, etc... |
| logistic growth | the pattern of population that occurs when carrying capacity is reached after rapid (exponential) growth occurs | |
| parasitism | when one organism (the parasite) relies upon an different organism for a life need while harming that organism | tapeworms, mosquitos, ticks and leeches are examples |
| population | a number of organisms belonging to the same species that live in a defined area | |
| predation | when one organisms consumes (eats) another organisms for survival | wolves prey on deer deer prey on grass |
| growth | when considering populations, the increase or decrease in size | positive growth shows an increase in population size, negative growth shows a decrease in population size |
| ecology | the study of interactions between biotic and abiotic factors of an ecosystem |
