cell fnct & strctr

cell structure and function

TermDefinitionhints/examples
cell smallest unit of life
cell membrane the structure which defines the boundaries of any cell, also found around eukaryotic organelles
cell wall a rigid structure which surrounds plant, fungi and bacteria cells
chloroplast the organelle which converts light energy into chemical energy (sugar) by photosynthesis
cilia small extensions of a cell's cytoskeleton structures which 'beat' to create movement
cytoplasm the contents of a cell between the nucleus and cell membrane (in eukaryotic cells)
cytoskeleton those structures of a cell which allow it to move, move substances within, or give the cell its shape/structure microtubules, microfilaments and intermediate filaments are examples
eukaryotic a cell that has a nucleus and other membrane bound organelles
flagella a long cytoskelton structure which 'whips' causing movement
golgi apparatus a packaging organelle of eukarytotic cell
lysosome a eukaryotic organelle which contains digestive enzymes to digest food or cell parts "-lys" means to break apart, digestion is to break apart
magnification the increase in apparent/perceived size of an object
microscope a tool which magnifies objects "micro-" means small
mitochondria a eukaryotic organelle responsible for converting chemical energy (sugar) into usable cell energy (ATP)
nucleolus a part of the eukaryotic nucleus that is responsible for ribosome production "-eolus" means little, as in little nucleus
nucleus the eukaryotic organelle responsible for housing the cell's DNA
organelle a eukaryotic cell part which is surrounded by a membrane and has a specific life function "-elle" means little, as in little organ
prokaryotic a cell type that does not have a nucleus of other membrane bound internal parts
resolution the clarity at which the smaller parts of an object are viewed
ribosomes a cell part which is responsible for the production of proteins that are typically used inside of the cell
rough endoplasmic reticulum a eukaryotic cell part responsible for the production of proteins that are typically used outside of the cell the 'r' in rough indicates that ribosome are present in the rough endoplasmic reticulum
smooth endoplasmic reticulum a eukaryotic cell part responsible for the break down of harmful substances and the production of lipids
vacuole a eukaryotic membranous storage 'sac'
vesicles typically a structure that transports substances to and from the golgi apparatus from other cell parts
bacteria a group of prokaryotic organisms, often associated with disease or decay

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
