FCSDGeo-Planet Earth

Planet Earth vocabulary (1)

TermDefinition
altitude height, measured in degrees, of an object above an observer's horizon
atmosphere shell of gases that surrounds a planet, for example, the air around Earth
circumference perimeter of a circle, ot the straight-line distance around a sphere
contour interval difference in height between two adjacent contour lines
contour line isoline on map that connects places with the same elevation & shows the shape of the land
contour map map that shows the shape of the land using contour lines; a map showing an elevation field; AKA topographic map
diameter the distance through the center of an object
equator imaginary line line that circles Earth halfway between the North & South poles
field region of space in which a similar quantity can be measured at every point or location
gradient rate of change in field values bewteen two points in a field; the average slope
Greenwich Mean Time time based on observations of the sun along the prime meridian
hydrosphere Earth's liquid water, including oceans, lakes, streams, & groundwater
isobar line of a weather map connecting places with the same atmospheric pressure
isoline line connecting points having the same value within a field
isotherm line within a temperature field or on a weather map that connects places that have the same temperature
latitude angular distance in degrees north or south of the equator; varies from 0 degrees at the equator to 90 degrees at the poles
lithosphere solid portion of Earth below the atmosphere & hydrosphere; a solid layer that includes the crust & the upper portion of Earth's mantle
longitude angular distance in degrees est or west of the prime meridian; varies from 0 degrees at the prime meridian to 180 degrees near the middle of the Pacific Ocean
meridian imaginary semicircle, drawn around Earth from the North Pole to the South Pole, that represents a constant longitude
model representation of an object or natural event
navigation science of locating position on Earth
North Star Polaris; the star located almost directly above the North Pole
oblate spheroid nearly spherical shappe of Earth, slightly flattened at the poles & slightly buldging at the equator
parallel imaginary line drawn around Earth parallel to the equator that represents a constant latitude
Polaris North Star; the star located almost directly above the North Pole
prime meridian imaginary line (semicircle) that runs through Greenwich, England fron the North Pole to the South Pole
scale ratio of the dimensions of the real object ot its model
slope gradient; rate of change in field values bewteen two points in a field; the average slope
topographic map map that shows the shape of the land using contour lines; a map showing an elevation field; AKA contour map
topographic profile a cross-sectional view that shows the elevation of the land along a particular baseline
troposphere lowest layer of air; reaches from Earth's surface up to about 12 km that contains most of the mass of the atmosphere

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
