Biology as Science
| Term | Definition | Hint/Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Biology | the study of life | -"ology" means to study "bio-" means life |
| Science | the process of exploring and understanding the natural world | biology is a science |
| Experiment | a systematic process used to test a hypothesis | |
| Theory | an explanation of related observations based upon supported hypotheses multiple times | A hypothesis is NOT a theory. Evidence-supported hypotheses support theories. |
| Hypothesis | a prediction of an outcome of an experiment based upon observations and inferences | "educated guess" |
| Independent Variable | a variable controlled by the experimenter | "I" control the "I"ndependent variable |
| Dependent Variable | a variable influenced by the independent variable; the data we measure | "depends" upon the independent variable |
| Constants | factors kept the same within all groups within an experiment | constant = same |
| Control Group | data group used for comparison to the experimental group; does not contain or include the independent variable | |
| Experimental Group | data group being tested by the hypothesis; includes the independent variable | |
| Data | all information gathered in an experiment | |
| Inference | an explanation for an observation based on past experience and prior knowledge | |
| Biologist | someone who studies biology | "bio-" means life "-ologist" means someone who studies |
| Analysis | organizing data into charts, tables, graphs, etc. to support or not support the hypothesis | We commonly use math functions to analyze data. |
| Observation | gathering of information by using our five senses | What we learn from others can be observations. |
