QuestionAnswer
Do cells need nourishment (food)like an organism does? yes cells perform life processes
Do cells create waste like an organism? yes cells perform life processes
Why do plants need turgor pressure? Plants do not have a skeleton for support. This keeps the plant upright.
If a plant wilts, what does this mean is happening inside the cells? The plant has decreased turgor pressure. The water in the cell is lower so the support is decreased.
Plant cells and animal cells have 2 differences in the organelles. What are they? Plant cells have chloroplasts and a cell wall. Animal cells do not.
A flower arrangement begins to die or wilt. What is the problem? The cells have lost turgor pressure.
Water moves in and out of cells. What is this called? osmosis
What controls water entering and leaving a cell? cell membrane
Plant and animal cells have vacuoles. What is the main difference between them? Plants have a larger vacuole to hold water for high turgor pressure
All organisms want to be at _____. equilibrium
The natural world wants to maintain equilibrium. One feedback mechanism to maintain this is called ____ Homeostasis
Eating food that is spoiled will result in stomach distress like vomiting. Identify the stimulus and the response. Eating the food is the stimulus. Vomiting is the response.
Vomiting or fever are examples of the body trying to maintain ______ equilibrium
What is the process that turns radiant energy (energy from the sun) into chemical energy? photosynthesis
What type of organism performs photosynthesis? plants
What organelle is involved directly in photosynthesis? chloroplasts
What is the substance inside a chloroplast? Chlorophyll
Plants perform photosynthesis because they are what type of organism? autotroph
Organisms that must eat their food are what type of organism? heterotroph
The plant kingdom only contains what type of organism? Heterotrophs or autotrophs? autotrophs
Why is a venus fly-trap called an autotroph and not a heterotroph if it eats insects? Fly-traps main source of energy is photosynthesis. Eating insects is only necessary when the soil is missing nutrients like nitrogen.
What does xylem carry in a plant? water
What does phloem carry in a plant? food
