Endocrine System - 1

Glands of Human Endocrine System and their Hormones

TermDefinition
Hypothalamus Hormones Hypothalmic Releasing Hormones & Hypothalmic Inhibiting Hormones
Hypothalmic Releasing Hormone Stimulates Anterior pituitary gland to secrete its hormones.
Hypothalmic Inhibiting Hormones Inhibits Anterior pituitary gland from secreting its hormones.
Posterior Pituitary Gland Hormones OT - Oxytocin ADH - Antidiuretic Hormone
OT - Oxytocin Stimulates uterine contraction during labor. Promotes female milk ejection by mammary glands
ADH - Antidiuretic Hormone Stimulates water reabsorption by kidneys Vasoconstriction of arterioles Inhibits sweat glands
Anterior Pituitary Gland Hormones Growth Hormone(GH), Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH),Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH), Luteinizing Hormone (LH), Prolactin (PRL), Adrenocorticotropic Hormone (ACTH)
Growth Hormone(GH) Stimulates growth and metabolism
Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) Stimulates thyroid gland to secrete Thyroid Hormone (TH)
Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) Females - maturation of eggs & secretion of estrogens Males - Sperm prodcution
Luteinizing Hormone (LH) Females - Ovulation, Corpus Luteum, secretion of progesterone Males - secretion of testosterone, LH AKA ICSH (Interstitial cell Simulating Hormone)
Prolactin (PRL) Stimulates Milk production by mammary glands
Adrenocorticotropic Hormone (ACTH) Stimulates adrenal cortex to secrete its hormones
Thyroid Gland Hormones Thyroid Hormones (TH), Thyroxine (T4), Triiodothyronine (T3), Calcitonin (CT)
Thyroid Hormones (TH), Thyroxine (T4), Triiodothyronine (T3) Increases metabolic rate, body temperature, stimulates protein synthesis
Calcitonin (CT) Lowers blood calcium level and inhibits bone resorption
Parathyroid Glands Hormones Parathyroid Hormone(PTH)
Parathyroid Hormone(PTH) Raises blood calcium level, increases activity of osteoclasts, increases intertinal absorption of calcium, promotes kidney resorption of calcium & secretion of phosphate.
Adrenal Cortex Gland Hormones Aldosterone, Mineralocorticoids, Cortisol, Glucocorticoids, Androgens, Gonadocorticoids
Aldosterone & Mineralocorticoids Stimulates kidneys to reabsorb Na+ & secrete K+
Cortisol & Glucocorticoids Increasees blood glucose level, breakdown of protein, fat for energy, inhibits inflammatory and immune responses.
Androgens & Gonadocorticoids Contribute to onset of puberty development of axillary & pubic hair
Adrenal Medulla Gland Hormones Epinephrine(Epi)(aka - Adrenaline), Norepinephrine (NE) (aka - Noradrenaline)
Epinephrine(Epi)(aka - Adrenaline) and Norepinephrine (NE) (aka - Noradrenaline) fight or flight response; stimulates heart and lungs, increase blood pressure, increases metabolic rate, and increases blood glucose.
Pineal Gland Hormones Melatonin
Melatonin set body's biological clock, regulates sleep-wake cycle
Pancrease Hormones Glucogen, Insulin
Glucogen Raises blood glucose leve, gycogen breakdown (glcogenolysis) adn stimulates formation of new glucose from noncarbohydreates (gluconeogenesis)
Insulin Loweres blood glucose level, stimulates glucose uptake by cells, fromation of glycogen (glycogenesis), formation of fat (lipogenesis)
Female Gonads(Ovaries) Hormones Estrogen and progesterone
Estrogen and progesterone Stimulate female sex characteristics, regulate menstrual cycle, maintain pregnancy
Male Gonads (Testes) Testosterone
Testosterone Stimulate male sex characteristics, regulate sperm production
Thymus Gland Hormones Thymosin, Thymopoietin, and Thymulin(Thymic factor)
Thymosin, Thymopoietin, and Thymulin(Thymic factor) Stimulate differentiation & maturation of T lymphocytes (T cells)

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
