Environmental Science Final 2013

TermDefinition
Change in Seasons The angle of the earth on its axis changes the direction of the hemispheres on the sun.
weather The state of the atmosphere at a place and time as regards heat, cloudiness, dryness, sunshine, wind, rain, etc.
climate The weather conditions prevailing in an area in general or over a long period
Greenhouse Effect Trapping of the suns warmth in a planets atmosphere
Major Greenhouse Gases Carbon Dioxide, Methane, Nitrous Oxide, and CFC'S
Latitude, Rates of Heating, and Insolation Related? As the angle of insolation goes up the rate of heating of the latitude then that surface heats up faster so a lower rate of heating.
THC Ocean circulation mixed with freshwater to heat the surfaces
What if the THC shuts down? Studies say that certain areas will experience a cooling period because the current gives that area their warmth.
Ozone Ozone is O2, and it is found in the stratosphere and troposphere. it helps block out the UV radiation by creating clouds.
Good Ozone V. Bad Ozone Good Ozone- in the stratosphere and helps block out the UV radiation Bad Ozone- in the troposphere or closer to us and it can damage plants and buildings and lung tissue damage.
Specific Heat for Soil, WAter, and Sand Soil- High Specific Heat: heats up slow Water- High Specific Heat: heats up slow Sand- Low Specific Heat: heats up fast
Angle of Insolation How the sun is hitting a specific surface 0- Low 45 90- HIghest 45 0-Low
Albedo The proportion of the incident light or radiation reflected by a surface, typically that of a planet or moon.
Albedo of Darker Surfaces Higher Albedo
Albedo of Lighter Surfaces Lower Albedo

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
