Osmosis, diffusion

Key terms concerning these two essential processes

TermDefinition
Diffusion The movement of particles from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration
Passive process A process which can take place without using energy
Active process A process which requires energy to take place
Fluids A state of matter in which the particles have no fixed shape and are able to move (liquids and gases)
Alveolus One of the many tiny air sacks inside the lungs through which gases are exchanged
Alveoli Plural for alveolus
Stoma One of the minute poresin the epidermis of the leaf of a plant, through which gases move
Membrane A thin, sheet like structure that forms a boundary in an arganism
Partially permeable membrane A membrane that is only permeable enough to let certain substances pass through
Semipermeable membrane Another name for a partially permeable membrane
Selectively-permeable membrane Another name for a partially permeable membrane
Osmosis The movement of water molecules through a partially permeable membrane from a solution with a lower concentration of dissolved solutes to a solution with a higher concentation of dissolved solutes until an equilibrium is reached
Lysis 'Bursting an animal cell by osmosis' - Bitesize
Crenation 'Shrinking an animal cell by osmosis' - Bitesize
Turgid 'A plant cell fully inflated with water' - Bitesize
Plasmolysed 'A plant cell that has lost water causing the cell membrane to be pulled away from the inside of the cell wall' - Bitesize
Flaccid 'A plant cell that is limp through a reduction of pressure inside the cell' - Bitesize
Water potential The tendency of water to leave or enter a cell
Active transport The movement of ions across a partially permeable membrane from an area of lower concentration to an area of higher concentration using energy from respiration

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
