Chapter 6-Nutrition
Nutrition
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Two types of nutrition | Autotrophic nutrition and Heterotrophic nutrition |
| Autotrophic nutrition | Is a type of nutrition in which organisms synthesise organic compounds (food) they require from inorganic substances.Energy is derived from the Sun or chemical substances. |
| Two types of autotrophic | Chemosynthesis and Photosynthesis |
| Chemosynthesis | Synthesising organic compounds by using energy from the oxidation of inorganic chemical substances such as carbon dioxide.Examples are sulphur bacteria which oxidises sulphur to sulphate. |
| Photosynthesis | Synthesising organic compounds from carbon dioxide and water with the presence of sunlight. |
| Heterotrophic nutrition | Is a type of nutrition in which organisms have to depend on autotrophs or other organisms as a source of energy as they cannot synthesise their own food.Energy is derived from the intake and digestion from plant and animal tissues. |
| Three types of heterotrophic | Holozoic nutrition,Parasitism and Saprophytism |
| Holozoic nutrition | Involves feeding by ingesting complex organic matter which are then digested and absorbed. |
| Saprophytism | Involves feeding by absorbing their required nutrients from dead organic matter. |
| Parasitism | Involves feeding by absorbing their nutrients from living organisms. |
| Balanced diet | A balanced diet is one who contains the correct proportion of all the classes of food according to the requirements of the body. |
