Ecology the study of the relationships and interactions of living things and non-living things in an environment
food chain a line of living organisms that show energy flow using arrows that point in the direction that the energy is going
food web many food chains showing interconnection of the organisms and the flow of energy
photosynthesis the process of making food using the suns energy
producer autotrophs-make own food-- plants
autotroph make own food
heterotroph can not make own food- have to find food to eat- animals
consumers heterotrophs-can not make own food
herbivore eat only plants
carnivore eat only meat
omnivore eat meat and plants
trophic levels 1st-green plants 2nd-herbivores 3rd-carnivores
predator eat prey
prey get eaten by predator
decomposer break down and recycle organic material into nutrients for others to use. examples of great decomposer- fungi and bacteria
niche a term to describe a species' role in an ecosystem. Niches include all that a species does and all the resources it uses.
competition when there are limited resources and you need to compete for what there is
extinction when a whole species of organisms die off
symbiosis two organisms living in a relationship together
commensalism one organism benefits and the other is not harmed or benefits, (unaffected)
parasite one organism benefits and the other is harmed
mutualism both organisms benefit from the relationship
