Biodiversity The sum total of all organisms in an area, taking into account the variety of species, their genes, their populations, and their communities, called biodiversity.
Genetic diversity The differences in DNA among individuals within species and populations is called genetic diversity.
Treaty When nations ratify a treaty, they promise to uphold the laws that are described.
Captive breeding The process of raising organisms in controlled conditions, such as zoos and botanical, is called captive breeding.
Species diversity Species diversity is the number or variety of species in the world or in a particular region.
Latitudinal gradient A scientific study counted more ant species near the equator than near the North Pole, which demonstrates a natural pattern called the latitudinal gradient.
Mass extinction Based on current data about species populations trends, some scientists claim we are in the middle of Earth's sixth mass extinction.
Extinction A species is extinction to an area if it is found nowhere else in the world.
Biodiversity hotspot A biodiversity hot spot is an area that supports an especially high number of endemic species, but is rapidly losing biodiversity.
Physical Hazard Some ongoing natural phenomena, such as ultraviolet(UV) radiation from sunlight, represent physical hazard.
Genetic Some diseases, such as breast cancer, can be traced to genetic factors in addition to environmental hazards.
Allergens Substances known as allergens cause the immune system to overreact to a normally harmless substance.
Volcano a volcano is an opening in the Earth's crust through which molten lava, ash, and gases are ejected.
Tornado A tornado is a type of windstorm in which a funnel of rotating air drops down from a storm cloud and touches Earth's surface.
Climate Climate describes the pattern of atmospheric condition in large geographic regions over long period of time.
Smog If you combine the words smoke and fog, you get the word smog.
Ozone hole The term ozone hole hole was used to describe the area of lowered ozone concentration over Antarctica.
Air pollution Air pollution is the release of damaging materials into the atmosphere.
Clean air act In the u.s, the clean air act, a law initially passed in 1963, protects and improves the quality of air in order to to safeguard human health and the environment.
Water diversion The process of moving water from its from its source to some place where humans use it, such as homes and farm fields, is called water diversion.
Point source Point source pollution comes from discrete or species locations.
Biological Biological pollution is caused by pathogens, disease-causing organisms.
Water table In an aquifer, the boundary between the zone of aeration and the zone of saturation is known as the water table.
Agriculture Globally, about 70 percent of our fresh water is used for agriculture.
Reservoir A large lake that stores water for humans a reservoir.
Algal bloom An algal bloom is a sudden explosion of algal growth caused by excess nutrients.
Thermal Thermal pollution occurs when water is returned to its source at a temperature that is higher than when it is taken,
