Integumentary System

sebaceous glands produce an oily substance called sebum that helps keep the dermis flexible and waterproof
hair follicles tubelike pockets of epidermal cells that extend into the dermis; at the base, cells form hair
What are the 3 components of the integumentary system? skin, hair and nails
What are they made of? skin: epidermis, dermis and fat hair & nails: keratin
What are the structures found inside the skin? sebaceous gland, sweat gland, hair follicle, hair shaft, artery, vein
epidermis - the inner layer has cells that grow rapidly and push the older cells up to the surface - melanocytes, hair shaft, pores
demis -contains collagen, blood vessels, nerve endings, glands, sensory receptors, smooth muscles and hair follicles - sweat glands, sebaceous glands
What is the function of the integumentary system? How does it relate to homeostasis? -protects us against infection and injury, regulate body temperature, removes waste, gathers info and produces vitamin D - the skin removes excess heat through sweat and the hair helps prevent heat loss from the head
How do you get skin cancer? What are the different types? -uncontrollable cell growth - benign, squamous, melanoma
What other system does the integumentary system work with other systems to maintain homeostasis? -muscular system: muslces help create spasms beneath our skin to shiver and cause goosebumps when we are cold - circulatory: in the dermis is arteries and veins which help transport blood to and from the heart
