Neurons c

TermDefinition
Nervous System is physically connected network of cells, tissues, and organs that controls thoughts, movements, and simpler life processes
Endocrine System collection of physically disconnected organs that helps to control growth, development, and responses in your body
Stimulus Endocrine and Nervous system help respond to stimulus which is something that causes a response. Chemical, cellular, or behavioral
How Endocrine system works chemical signals are carried through the bloodstream throughout the body and only cells with specific receptors can receive it
How the Nervous system works Sends its signals through a network of specialized tissues
Difference between Endocrine system Endocrine sends messages through the blood and only certain cells receive the chemical signals. It occurs slowly and regulates processes over long periods of time
Difference between Nervous Nervous: sends electrical signals, signal sent through tissues, and responds quickly, controls immediate processes
2 parts of nervous system Central nervous system, and peripheral nervous system
Central nervous system includes the brain and the spinal cord, and interprets messages from other nerves in the body and stores some for later use
Peripheral nervous system network of nerves that transmit signals to your CNS and then from CNS to other organs in the body
Neuron specialized cell that stores information and carries messages within the nervous system and between other body systems
DENDRITES Branch like extensions of the cytoplasm and the cell membrane that receive messages from neighboring cells
Axon Long extension that carries electrical messages away from the cell body and passes them to other cells
Sensory Neurons detect stimuli and transmit signals to the brain and the spinal cord
Interneurons receive signals from the sensory neurons and replay them within the brain and spinal cord
Motor Neurons Pass messages from the nervous system to other tissues in the body
Neurons transmit signals in what form Chemical and electrical
resting potential the difference in charge across the membrane
Sodium potassium pump uses energy to actively transport Na+ ions out of the cell and k+ ions in the cell
action potential electrical impulse
Axon terminal is part of the axon through which the impulse leaves the neuron, contains chemical-filled vesicles
threshold amount a neuron needs to be stimulated before it produces active potential

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
