| endocrine glands | produce and release chemical products directly into the bloodstream |
| hormone | the chemical product of an endocrine gland |
| target cells | cells that recognize a specific hormone's structure |
| hypothalamus | the link between the nervous and endocrine systems |
| pituitary gland | communicates with the hypothalamus to control many body activities |
| negative feedback | a signal in a system that is turned off by the condition it produces |
| sperm | male sex cell |
| egg | female sex cell |
| fertilization | the joining of the egg and sperm |
| reproduction | the process by which living things produce new individuals of the same type |
| zygote | a fertilized egg |
| chromosomes | structures that carry the information that controls inherited characteristics, like hair color and blood type |
| testes | organs in which sperm are produced |
| testosterone | the hormone that controls the development of physical characteristics in men |
| scrotum | the external pouch of skin that keeps the ideal temperature for sperm development |

| estrogen | the hormone that controls the development of physical characteristics in women |
| oviduct | passageway for eggs; where fertilization takes place |

| uterus | place where the fertilized egg grows; womb |
| vagina | the birth canal |
| menstrual cycle | the monthly cycle of changes that occurs in the female reproductive system |
| ovulation | the process of releasing a mature egg into the oviduct |
| menstruation | the process of shedding the lining of the uterus if the egg is not fertilized |
| embryo | name given to a zygote until eight weeks |
| fetus | name given to a baby after eight weeks |
| amniotic sac | a membrane that surrounds the embryo and develops into a fluid-filled sac |
| placenta | the link between the developing embryo and the mother |
| umbilical cord | a ropelike structure that forms between the embryo and the placenta |
| labor | stage of birth in which strong, muscular contractions begin |
| delivery | stage of birth when the baby is completely pushed out of the mother's body |
| afterbirth | stage of birth when contractions push the placenta out of the mother's body |
| adolescence | stage of development when children become adults physically and mentally |
| puberty | the period of sexual development in which the body becomes able to reproduce |
