SHMS 8th Grade Science Vocab 1

TermDefinition
Independent Variable The part of the experiment that is changed by the experimenter.
Dependent Variable The variable that responds to the change in the independent variable.
Hypothesis Is a prediction of outcome, based on observations and research.
Matter Anything that has mass and takes up space.
Volume The amount of space that matter in an object occupies.
Element Is a substance that contains only one type of atom.
Compound Is a substance that contains two or more different types of atoms bonded together.
Mass is the amount of matter in an object.
Atoms the smallest unit of matter.
Density the amount of mass per volume in matter.
Molecules two or more atoms of the same or different elements that are chemically bonded together.
Protons the positively charged sub-atomic particle in the nucleus of an atom.
Neutrons the neutral sub-atomic particle in the nucleus of an atom.
Electrons the negatively charged sub-atomic particle outside of the nucleus of an atom.
Ions is a charged particle can be positive or negative.
Isotopes a version of an element, in which the number of neutrons are different giving it a different atomic mass.
Periodic Table a tool organizing all the elements by atomic number and characteristics.
