Producer An organism, esp a green plant, that builds up its own tissues from simple inorganic compounds An example of a producer is grass that is part of a grassland biome.
Primary Consumer An animal that feeds on plants An example of this consumer is a grasshopper which lives in a grassland.
Secondary Consumer A carnivore that feeds only upon herbivores A rat living in the grassland is a good example of this consumer.
Tertiary Consumer An animal that feeds only on secondary consumers Snakes in grasslands replicate this consumer well.
Quaternary Consumer An animal that eats a tertiary consumer Finally a hawk also in a grassland is a Quaternary consumer.
Autotrophs Any organism capable of self-nourishment Algae in a pond biome represent autotrophs
Heterotrophs An organism requiring organic compounds for its principal source of food. Fish in a pond biome are heterotrophs.
Herbivores An animal that only consumes plants. An example of a herbivore is a grasshopper in a grassland.
Carnivores An animal that eats flesh. An example of a carnivore is a hawk in a grassland.
Omnivore An animal that consumes both plants and flesh. An example of a omnivore is a rat in a grassland.
Food Chain The chain from a food source to the ultimate consumer. An example of a food chain is a pond food chain.
