| Muscular system | made up of the muscles that let you move |
| Smooth muscle | an involuntary muscle found in the digestive tract and in the walls of blood vessels. It helps move food through the digestive system. |
| Cardiac muscle | an involuntary muscle found only in your heart. It pumps blood around the body. |
| Skeletal muscle | a voluntary or involuntary muscle that is attached to your bones for movement. It also helps protect your inner organs. |
| Voluntary muscle action | muscle action that is under your control |
| Involuntary muscle action | muscle action that is not under your control |
| Movement | send a signal to your brain. Then, your skeletal muscle cells receive the signal. Your muscle cells then contract. |
| Tendons | strands of tough connective tissue that connect your skeletal muscles to your bones |
| Flexor | a muscle that bends part of the body |
| Extensor | a muscle that straightens part of your body |
| Resistance exercise | a great way to strengthen skeletal muscles. People work against the weight of an object in this exercise. |
| Aerobic exercise | a steady, moderately intense activity. This kind of exercise mostly strengthens the heart and increases endurance. |
| Strain | an injury in which a muscle or tendon is overstretched or torn. It often happens because a muscle has not been warmed up or is worked too hard. |
| Tendinitis | People who exercise too much can hurt their tendons. The body can’t repair an injured tendon before the next exercise session,so the tendon becomes inflamed. |
| Anabolic steroids | a drug that makes muscles stronger that can cause long-term health problems |
