Skeletal system bones, cartilage, and the connective tissue that holds bone together
Bones help support, protect, store minerals, and produce blood, is made of connective tissue and minerals
Osteoblasts living cells that deposit minerals
Compact bone the bone tissue that does not have any visible open spaces. It is rigid and dense with tiny canals with it contain small blood vessels.
Spongy bone the bone tissue that has many open spaces. It provides most of the strength and support for a bone.
Marrow a soft tissue found in the bone
Cartilage flexible tissue in which most bones start out as
Joint a place where two or more bones meet. It allows your body to move when your muscles contract.
Gliding Joint allow bones in the hand and wrist to glide over one another and give some flexibility to the area
Ball-and-Socket Joint lets your arm or hip move freely in all directions
Hinge Joint enables you to flex and extend your muscle
Ligaments strong elastic bands of connective tissue that connect bones in a joint.
Cartilage covers the ends of many bones and helps cushion the area in a joint where bones meet
Fracture when bones are broken
Dislocated Joint a joint in which one or more bones have been moved out of place
Sprain a ligament is stretched too far or torn
Osteoporosis a disease that causes bones to become less dense
Arthritis joints may swell or stiffen
