QuestionAnswer
What type of mutualistic relationship? A bee gets nectar from a flower, and the flower's pollen is transported to other flowers by the bee. mutualism
What type of mutualistic relationship? A leaf cutter ant scavenges leafs from the forest and brings it back to their nests for fungus to grow on. The leaf cutter ant harvests the fungus for food. mutualism
What type of mutualistic relationship ? Humans digest cellulose that can not be normally digested by their bodies. E. coli bacteria living in the human digestive system breaks down the cellulose into nutrients. Humans then absorb the nutrients. mutualism
What term describes a symbiotic relationship in which both species benefits? mutualism
What allows DNA to have the ability to pass on traits? the sequence of nitrogenous bases
Rainforests are found in equatorial regions of the world. They contain many different types of animals and plants. What types of ecosystems make up a rainforest? many different ecosystems...it varies!
In studying evolution, scientists look at embryonic development. Which stage (early, middle or late) is most important to scientists? early
Why are embryonic stages important to scientists? common ancestors
What does DNA make-up? genes
What does many genes make-up? chromosomes
What type of replication would produce two copies that each contained one of the original strands and one new strand? semiconservative replication
What type of replication would leave the two original template DNA strands together in a double helix and would produce a copy composed of two new strands containing all of the new DNA base pairs. conservative replication
Why is asexual reproduction bad for survival? limits amount of genetic recombination
If a species is limited by genetic recombination, what does this mean? the species has limited diversity
The amino acid leucine is coded by the codons ACC, ACU, ACA and ACG. If the original DNA says ACA, but the new DNA says ACG, what type of mutation is this? Silent
The amino acid leucine is coded by the codons ACC, ACU, ACA and ACG. The original DNA codes ACU. What would happen if a mutation occurs to the third base in the codon? Nothing...its a silent mutation
What is the main energy source in an ecosystem? Sun
What are the six levels of the ecosystem in order from lowest to highest? Organism, Population, Community, Ecosystem, Biome, Biosphere
If white-tail deer disappeared from a population, what would happen to the rest of the ecosystem? All the predators that eat the deer will have to find a new food source or die off. The grass population will grow!
What is one similarity between mitosis and meiosis? Both are a form of cell division.
Coming off every strawberry plant are runners. What form of reproduction are runners? asexual
How does having both sexual and asexual reproductive processes help the strawberry plant survive? Sexual reproduction allows for genetic recombination to occur. This permits more variation in the offspring increasing their chances of survival. Asexual reproduction allows the species to survive when conditions for sexual reproduction is unfavorable.
What mutation would continue to increase in a population? one that benefits the population
If B=Black hair and b=red hair, what would the probability of a offspring being homozygous recessive be for a cross of Bb x bb? 50%
If B=Black hair and b=red hair, what would the probability of a offspring being homozygous recessive be for a cross of BB x bb? 0%
If B=Black hair and b=red hair, what would the probability of a offspring being homozygous recessive be for a cross of Bb x Bb? 25%
Where are glycolipids produced in the cell? Golgi apparatus
What does meiosis produce? haploid sperm/pollen in males haploid eggs in females
What does haploid mean? Having half the number of the normal chromosomes
If a cell with 50 chromosomes is going through meiosis, how many chromosomes will each daughter cell (egg/sperm) have? 25
If a cell with 50 chromosomes is going through mitosis, how many chromosomes will each daughter cell have? 50
If a cell with 50 chromosomes is going through meiosis, how many cells will be produced? 4
If a cell with 50 chromosomes is going through mitosis, how many cells will be produced? 2
If a cell with 120 chromosomes is going through meiosis, how many chromosomes will each daughter cell (egg/sperm) have? 60
If a cell with 120 chromosomes is going through mitosis, how many chromosomes will each daughter cell have? 120
If a cell with 120 chromosomes is going through meiosis, how many cells will be produced? 4
If a cell with 120 chromosomes is going through mitosis, how many cells will be produced? 2
What happens in a cell with a malfunctioning Golgi complex? materials could not be transported out of the cell
What is the proper way of writing a hypothesis? Use an if...then statement
Earth is mainly salt water. Why is rain water fresh? Because when water evaporates from the salt water salt remains behind, and only the water is evaporated. So when the water condenses and falls as precipitation, it is fresh water.
What term is applied to an object that has never been living? abiotic a= not bio = living
What term is applied to an object that has once lived or is currently living? biotic
Abiotic or biotic? Water abiotic
Abiotic or biotic? Air abiotic
Abiotic or biotic? sunlight abiotic
Abiotic or biotic? temperature abiotic
Abiotic or biotic? plant biotic
Abiotic or biotic? frog biotic
Abiotic or biotic? Mold biotic
Abiotic or biotic? feces biotic
Antibiotic resistant bacteria are becoming more prevalent. What causes bacteria to become antibiotic resistant? The antibiotics kills the bacteria that are susceptible to it...leaving behind bacteria that can't be killed by the antibiotics. These antibiotic resistant bacteria reproduce and become deadly within an area.
How can an experiment be valid even though the hypothesis was incorrect? Because the hypothesis only guides the experimental process...the results of the experiment can be different and still be valid
In mendel's experiments: first generation: purple flower was crossed with a white flower to get a purple. The Purple flower was self pollinated to get purple and white. How did the white flower reappear? It is a recessive gene that in the presence of a dominant gets hidden by it.
In mendel's experiments: first generation: purple flower was crossed with a white flower to get a purple. The Purple flower was self pollinated to get purple and white. How does a farmer only get white flowers? Only permit white flowers to reproduce with each other.
