Plant Control

How plants respond to stimulus

QuestionAnswer
Give two examples of stimuli plants will react to: Light Intensity and Gravity.
Name two automatic responses to stimuli in Plants: Phototropism and Geotropism.
Phototropism: Response to a light source, negative response will cause the movement away from the source, positive towards the source.
Geotropism: The response to gravity.
What is the name of the chemical that determines how a plant will grow? Auxin (Indoleatic Acid - IAA).
Why is it important that organisms are able to respond to their environment? It increases the chances of survival by optimising their internal and external state.
How does Indoleatic Acid help to determine growth of a plant in stems and roots? Photo - Shaded areas build up Auxin and this causes the cell walls to become loose and the stem will bend towards the light source (positive). Roots will do the opposite. Geo - Stems response with Negative and roots Positive to gravity.
How do plants detect light? With Photoreceptors.
What is the name of a specific photoreceptor in plants? Phytochromes.
What are the two states a phytochrome can be in? Pr (Red) and Pfr (Far Red).
What is the difference between the two phytochrome states? Pr absorbs Red Light, inhibits the growth of leaves and chlorophyll and will cause the growth of Interstems. Pfr does the opposite - more chlorophyll, more leaves, more flowering and less interstem
Which phytochrome state will be more present on a sunny day? Pfr
