Weathering and Water

Weathering Water Erosion and Deposition Chapter 4-5 Earth's S.

TermDefinition
Erosion The process in which sediment is picked up and moved from one place to another. pg. 145
Deposition The process in which transported sediment is laid down. pg. 145
Mass Wasting The downhill movement of loose rock or soil. pg. 147
Weathering The process by which natural forces break down rocks. Pg. 116
Mechanical Weathering The breakdown of rock into smaller pieces of the same material without any changes in its composition. pg. 116
Exfoliation In geology, the process in which layers or sheets of rock gradually break off due to the release of pressure. pg. 116
Abrasion The process of wearing down by friction. pg. 116
Chemical Weathering The breakdown or decomposition of rock that takes place when minerals change through chemical processes. pg. 118
Drainage Basin An area of land in which water drains into a stream system. The borders of a drainage basin are called divides. pg. 151
Divide A continuous high line of land- or ridge- from which water drains to one side or the other. pg. 151
Floodplain A flat area of land on either side of a stream that becomes flooded when the river overflows its banks. pg. 152
Alluvial Fan A fan-shaped deposit of sediment at the base of a slope, formed as water flows down the slope and spreads at the bottom. pg. 153
Delta An area of land at the end, or mouth, of a river that is formed by the buidup of sediment. pg. 153
Sinkhole An open basin that forms when the roof of a cavern becomes so thin that it falls in. pg. 155
Load The soil particles and rock material carried by a stream.
Drainage system Network of rills, gullies, streams, and rivers in a area.
Mature River A river that has been developing for many thousands of years.
Meanders Loops formed by the curving and winding of a river.
Oxbow Lake Is formed when a loop formed by the curving and winding of a river is cut off from the rest of the river.
Levee A ridgelike deposit formed from larger particles deposited on the sides of a river.
Water, wind and ice Erosion of weathered material is moved by these three environmental factors.
Gravity _______is used to move water downward, carrying and depositing sediment as it flows.
